How much lime powder should I put on each cubicle?
We recommend trying 150-170g of lime powder per day, and adjusting to suit your individual needs.
How often should I apply lime powder?
The frequency can vary depending on how clean you want your beds to be and how much you want to use to save money on bedding.
Do I apply the lime powder to the bed before or after the bedding?
Either is fine.
Should I use hydrated lime, ground limestone, or a mix?
At NW Resources, our lime powder is a feed grade, so it will not burn teats or udders; therefore, we would suggest not mixing it with any other lime.
Can I use lime powder on rubber mats and mattresses?
Yes you can.
Will lime powder irritate teats or legs on dairy cows if I use too much?
No it won’t.
Do I need to wear PPE when spreading lime powder?
Feed-grade lime powder (calcium carbonate) is a naturally occurring source of calcium and is widely used in livestock feed.
When used at the recommended application rate and thoroughly mixed with bedding, feed-grade lime is suitable for use in cattle housing.
To prevent irritation when handling, we would advise you to:
- Wear safety glasses if there is a risk of dust entering the eyes.
- Wear a suitable dust mask (FFP2 or equivalent) when mixing if dust is generated.
- Use gloves if handling the product for prolonged periods or if you have sensitive skin.
- Mix in a well-ventilated area.
- Wash hands after use.
- Store in a dry place and keep bags sealed when not in use.
Does lime powder actually help to control mastitis?
Adding lime powder to your bedding raises the pH, increasing absorption and reducing moisture, which helps to suppress the bacteria that cause mastitis.
How do I stop lime powder caking or becoming dusty?
Good daily cubicle management and not applying too much lime powder will help to prevent it from caking or being too dusty.
Does lime powder work if cubicles are wet or badly contaminated?
Cubicles should be scraped clean of any contamination before adding the lime powder, which will then do its job of absorbing moisture.
